Easter Message: Spiritual anchor to Hope
Is there anyone who wasn’t shocked over the past few weeks? This is a situation none of us could have anticipated nor imagined. The rapid spread of the COVID-19 caused many people in the world to be admitted to hospital or passed away.  2020 Easter Sunday online Worship Service was so sad and made me think. I repented of not being humble in God’s presence. I realized how precious it is to have worship service with brothers and sisters in Christ in the church.
Many people have lost their jobs, under fear of shelter-in place with uncertainty about the future and feeling anxiety.  As President Franklin Roosevelt had said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Remember that you are not alone. We are in the same boat together.
Mary Magdalene went to Jesus’ tomb when it was dark and discovered the light and hope that Jesus Christ had risen. And she became the first missionary to spread the Gospel. Jesus Christ died and had risen from the dead. He showed us victory over death. Let us rejoice in Christ who gave us Hope. We will get through these times. This too shall pass.  Dawn comes after darkness. Let us encourage each other with Vaccine of Hope and overcome this crisis.  We must disinfect to maintain our physical and mental health.
There are concerns for our families, vulnerable community members, those suffering from the illness, and the children and elderly entrusted to our care.  We must keep our faith, our calling and our mission to ‘put faith, hope and love into action.’ We will remain prayerful.
Now as we are facing a strong hurricane, it is time for us to lower our spiritual anchors to Hope, because God is in control.
“We have this hope as an anchor of the soul, firm and secure.  It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain”.   Hebrews 6:19
Let us pray for help from the Holy Spirit and have victory.

(관련 기사 참조)s180917226_02.jpg

“Making Masks that Save Lives Project”

NNKUMw started “Making Masks that Save Lives Project” in order to help neighbors in need due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. KUMW members around the country are making masks out of clothes they find in their houses, either through sewing machines or by hand, and handing them out to nearby nursing homes, homeless shelters, volunteer centers, children centers, etc to support the vulnerable members of the community. Hearing the news that medical workers are struggling from lack of PPEs and masks in New York, the epicenter of the virus, we purchased and delivered 2,300 N-98 masks to New York and New Jersey hospitals. as a joint effort by New York Conference KUMw Network and the NNKUMw. Delivering a total of 3,500 masks along with  Korean American Community Center and Sanctuary Church Network,  this became a good model for NNKUMw in terms of partnering with other associations.

New York Conference KUMw Network purchased 500 surgical masks, packed them into 3 pieces each, and delivered them to the homeless in the Manhattan region. For other regions, they decided to collect handmade masks by the churches at every end of the month for the next 3 months, which would be delivered to community volunteer centers. Executive director’s mother and mother-in-law who are currently ill, are being good models of the project by sorting & packaging the masks.

New England Conference KUMw Network delivered Health Kits in assisting Rev. Gabriela, who ministers to Hispanic Immigrant communities in Lawrence, Massachusetts, at which there are a lot of confirmed cases. (see related article)

Greater New Jersey Conference KUMw Network is supporting masks and necessities to hospitals, nursing homes, and police stations with collaborative efforts from each churches.

Delaware-Maryland Conference KUMw Network has sent masks to Johns Hopkins Hospital and other neighboring hospitals, as well as made 120 masks and delivered them to Korean Senior Welfare Center. The Senior center expressed their gratitude by sending an offering to purchase children masks.s102542838_4.jpg

N. Georgia Conference KUMw Network are working in the day and making masks at night, and sending them to Korean restaurants and doctors’ offices. They also sent 1,000 masks and 400 red bean bread to elderly living alone. They said “the sweet red bean bread made their day, since the prolonged isolation had been difficult and depressing for them recently.” They’ve set a goal to make 10,000 masks.

N. Illinois Conference KUMw Network delivered 600 surgical masks free of charge, via Chicago Korea Daily. They are planning to donate around 200 cloth masks to a community nursing home, as well as send child masks to NNKUMw. (see related article)

Cal-Nevada Conference KUMw Network has various churches participating in donating for handmade masks, purchased masks, and relief funds. They donated 1,706 child masks, 1,280 adult masks, gloves, relief offering, and food items to the community. This activity was covered in a report on Cal-Nevada Korean Focus Journal “Communication.” (see related article)

Cal- Pacific Conference KUMw Network participated in making cloth masks, as well as volunteered to manage orders of child and adult masks to a seaming factory. The factory’s CEO was touched and remarked “NNKUMw is amazing.” The network’s President Anne Lee shared that she is so proud to be a member of a UMW women’s ministry that is serving with a united heart all around the country.

Hearing the news that Florida Tampa Mission Institution: Cornerstone Family Ministries, one of  UMW’s 50 mission institutes in the nation, are in need of 7,000 child masks, NNKUMw decided to assist them and shared the request to 9 national networks. In one day, donations worth 3,000 masks surged in like tsunami waves. This wonderful work accounted for NNKUMw’s strength, as well as a definite praise to God who works through us.

W. Ohio Conference KUMw Network sent 2,000 masks and a donation to purchase child masks, upon hearing the need for child masks; they expressed their gratitude to be able to participate in such a good deed.

Rev. Hea Sun Kim, Executive Director of Scranton Women Leadership Center, sent her message “Truly amazing leaders. To all KUMw members who are truly putting love for neighbors into action, I love you and respect you!”

Mongolia UMW Network tried to send their handmade masks saying “We’ve always received, so now is an opportunity to give back,” but due to prohibition of exporting masks, they are distributing masks to the local communities.

To all of our beloved NNKUMw members around the nation who are practicing our motto of “ Faith, Hope, and Love in Action!” Our passion for saving lives is fighting the corona virus and fulfilling God’s Kingdom on earth.

A Shameful Confession

Today I want to introduce a precious woman of God:United Methodist Rev. Gabriela who pastors in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Rev. Gabriela immigrated to the U.S. in her teens. With her story as an illegal immigrant coming to the U.S. to find her dream to be a pastor, she is someone who paves the way for teenagers with likewise situations to survive legally. She opens up her house and lets them receive formal education, and connects them to the world. She pastors a Spanish church in Lawrence, one of the most economically distressed neighborhoods. She gives all of herself into the lives of immigrants in their struggles.

When the COVID-19 outbreak was rapidly spreading, we were all in our own homes, panicking in fear for the unknown future. Churches could no longer host services, all meetings were cancelled, and the UMW events we had planned were vanished. At a time when prayer was needed most, we were losing focus, unable to figure out where we were standing. We were lost on how to live as believers and followers of Christ. Our prayer had lost its strength and power, and we had lost our courage to testify to our living Lord. We were being shaken by what we could not understand.
Around then, I had a dream. As I was heading to the upper floor to take care of my grandchild, I saw a young black child lying in the water, with the waters about to drown the child’s face. Someone who seemed to be the mother was next to the child and was laying down next to the child. Seeing them, I hesitated, but rushed upstairs to my grandchild thinking the mother would save the child. When I woke from the dream, my heart ached. Only if I had just raised the child up to save the young one’s life… I was ashamed and regretful of myself for having ignored the situation. The more I reflected on the dream, I realized it represented my current self.

So I started to learn to make masks through Youtube videos. I took out my sewing machine I put away 20 years ago and started to gradually make one by one. During a time in which I thought there was nothing I could do, my heart slowly filled with joy as I started to make masks for someone.

Hearing the announcement of the mask making project on the National Network of KUMw from Executive Director, Myungrae Kim Lee, we devoted ourselves into making the masks, and among us were those who had already begun making some by themselves. We grabbed the materials and set a goal, met on Zoom to pray and discuss how to best help the people in need in one heart.

As I prayed for where the masks would be needed, I thought of Rev. Gabriela and her Spanish church in Lawrence. I had heard from her that the location was having over 900 confirmed cases, 8 confirmed families at her church were being quarantined, and her nieces and nephews were suffering from the virus. She had mentioned that her brother’s wife was in critical condition. Amidst all this pain, Rev. Gabriela wears her mask, delivers food on patients’ doors, and continues her ministry of taking care for people facing eviction and the homeless. She is sharing the gospel, seeking for the Lord’s peace. The illegal immigrants in the area who had survived day to day through manual labor are now living in fear, unable to pay rent and being threatened everyday with eviction from their landlords.sIMG-5841.JPG

Our network’s masks and health care kit would be of small encouragement for them, but my heart still aches. It was painful to think of the times I’ve been dismissing my neighbors as if their stories were far away. How unfair is it, that there are those who are expressing boredom while working from home, while there are those who experience realistic suffering and pain each day? What is the Lord trying to show me?

I shared this situation to the missions department, women’s ministry, evergreen society, and short-term mission teams at our church, to help out the Spanish community in Lawrence. There are times of disappointment when I don’t get the expected response, but I regain strength when unexpected people offer to give toward the mission.

As having lived a shameful, selfish spiritual life, the impact of this corona virus pandemic completely awakened my life. What can you do as a true Christian at this time? And who can you be? I read Apostle Paul’s words during today’s meditation: “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the good news of God's grace” (Acts 20:24). Tears of shame flow in my heart as I see people like Rev. Gabriela who runs around the virus-filled neighborhood day and night on a single mask, and those who look after the sheep of God.

A few of us had gathered at church wearing masks and gloves to make the health care kit. Some had said, “Though it is for a good cause, isn’t it too dangerous? We’re told to stay at home; we shouldn’t go near Lawrence.” My response is this: Then who can be the doctors and the nurses? Who can then volunteer to help those patients? Who can provide the groceries and work in factories to produce the foods? Who can drive the cars to deliver them to our doors? Who can maintain the electricity and water works?

I am so ashamed. I’m the smallest of all volunteers. So my heart aches and I’m sorry that I am in such comfort and safety. I’m so sorry to Apostle Paul’s confession, who did not think of his own life for the sake of the gospel. Thus, I want to be of help beside Rev. Gabriela. I want to follow her path like that of Apostle Paul’s, to be up close in following the road of the cross.

Our New England Conference KUMw Network members continue to make masks–those without sewing machines having their fingers pricked from needles–with some doing the work until 2:00 am-3:00 am, but they say their hearts are so joyful and happy. We have also been waiting on our orders of medical masks to deliver to the hospitals. We realized that surgeons are sparing their share of masks, reusing them for a week by sterilizing them in alcohol. We also heard the nurses are out of protective caps. We heard homeless shelters are out of places to separate confirmed patients from those who are not yet tested.

So many heart-aching incidents are happening right close to us, so I am trying to open my eyes wide not to repeat walking past the drowning child in my dream, thinking someone else would do it. The things we are now doing are so small, but I want to reach forward step by step, as the Lord shows and guides me. This is my sharing nowadays as I live with a thankful and repenting heart to the Lord for opening my eyes, little by little.

곧바로 할아버지는 마스크를 픽업하며 "Thank you for your prayer"라는 말씀을 하고 가셨습니다.

A Seamstress’ Prayer

I’m a seamstress. Sewing is what I’m best at, as well as my profession.
Around this time of the year, business is supposed to be busy calling for overnight work with school proms and weddings––not this year, though. Yet since the Cleaner’s  has to be open, I still go to work every day. During the first week, I did a lot of cleaning and tidying up. As I started to clean, I found quite a few fabrics laying around. Wondering if I should try making masks since I had some clothes, skills, and the time, I got on it. But just like how this time is a first for everyone, this was my first time making a mask, and I didn’t have a pattern for one. After quite a while, I managed to make 6 pieces.

Right then, I got a call from a White old man, our regular customer, whose wife is now fighting cancer. He asked if I could make him 6 masks to use on their way to Philadelphia for chemotherapy. What is the timing. I felt the Lord had known it all and given me the thought to make those masks. He soon came by to pick them up and said to me, “Thank you for your prayer.” Those words describing my masks as ‘my prayer’ stuck in my mind for the whole day.

I then remembered the elderly people at my church, the elders and deaconesses who would always worship in the very front row every Sunday. Thinking of their kind faces, I made and brought some masks to church and shared with the members.

Then when I heard from NNKUMw that a senior center in Maryland is in urgent need of 100 masks, I rushed through making more masks.

I was filled with joy that my skill could be a gift for someone’s health, more than just a job. As I kept thinking about the old man’s words, I realized that these masks are not just pieces of masks but my prayer for someone. From then on, I loudly pray and praise while making my adult and child masks. My prayer and praise are fully embedded in my masks. “May the evil corona virus go away!” I make them as I declare this prayer that I learned from Lent prayer. Hence, all those who put on my masks will stay healthy. The corona virus won’t go near them.

Making Masks that Save Lives Project”

In this time of pandemic, our Chicago UMW members got together to fulfill Christ’s heart–His heart for the soul beyond race, economic status, religion or culture–by sharing love to our neighbors in need. As requested by NNKUMw, we joined the “Making Masks that Save Lives Project” from April 10.

Yet, by then it was difficult to obtain the materials–the fabric and especially the elastic strings to hang on the ears. Also, it was not easy to go around outside the home due to home quarantine. Yet despite these struggles, several churches had already begun making the masks using some clothes they had, and strings instead of elastic ones. “Where there is a will, there is a way” indeed.

For some churches where sewing was difficult, chose to purchase surgical masks. Fortunately, we were able to connect with an importing vendor and bought 600 pieces. We handed them to the Chicago Korea Daily personnel, and the masks were delivered abiding to social distancing guidelines on April 22 to 120 families, 5 pieces each.

Now we plan to send handmade cloth masks to the nursing homes. Deaconess J is a nurse, who devotes her precious resting time on weekends on the sewing machine. Her plan is making 30 masks. Deaconess K, a retired math teacher, took out and wiped the dust on the sewing machine which was used to make her children’s clothes 30 years ago. She is making the masks every night until 2-3 am with the goal of making 60 pieces. Despite being amateurs in sewing, these two are doing their very best.

Deaconess Y, who is a sewing pro, happened to have a roll of fabric she had brought from Seoul. She handed 50 masks yesterday to the women's group president, rushing her way back to her infant care job. Despite all the struggles we are facing, each of us is currently trying their best to make the masks at their location. Amateur or pro, they are dedicated to the work; many KUMw members would be on their sewing machines even at this moment.

We received a request from the NNKUMw for small-size masks for children. Seeing the instructions, this one seems to be possible by hand; hopefully more people will be able participate. All these hands making life-saving masks at their own place of quarantine…how beautiful are they! God will surely bless these loving hands…

In Making the Pink Masks

The corona virus has reached here in the Bay area at an unprepared state.s1611221.pngMany died suffering from pain, and countless are living in fear of the virus. I could experience from my skin just how weak humans are. I also am currently limiting myself from going outside and quarantining at home.
Since all I can do now in my state is to pray, I have been praying every early morning with a prayer for the world. I could not stop from praying each day, for everyone to get through it well and live not forgetting God’s grace.
Just like any other day, I wore a mask and went to work at the Cleaner’s. Hearing president of NNKUMw Grace Pyen’s heart for wanting to donate masks to places in need, I gladly decided to participate. ‘Oh Lord! This is what I can do!’ The Lord showed me what I could do. Cutting the pink cloth and sewing it with white string, a mask started to come in shape. As I finished the masks one by one, I could feel my heart warming up. Though they weren’t perfect like sold products, I was glad to be able to help in keeping the elderly in the nursing homes safe.

At this time when there is nothing else to do but to stay still, I am sincerely joyful and thankful that I am able to be used through my talent from God. The masks were delivered to a Bay area nursing home. I hope the warm heart the Lord gave me was also delivered along with the masks. During this period of chaos, the Lord is at work in each aspect of our lives. I pray again today, hoping for the day we can all gather in good health and worship the Lord together.

s10430247651.jpegMission Field News: Central Asia Kazakhstan Ushtobe Mission Center

Spring has come to Ushtobe, Kazakhstan in Central Asia. Ushtobe was no exception from the spread of the corona virus. Yet Missionary Helen Park is praying along with Mission Center  members as she looks after the poor neighbors going through difficulties from the virus and sells her greenhouse cucumber produce and organic poultry from hatched chicks. The profits are used as scholarships to afford tuition for youths as well as provide meals for poor families and the elderly.

Following is Missionary Helen Park’s mission report: “In the midst of these difficult times, God provides growth for the cucumber seeds to sprout their buds into flowers on which cucumbers grow, giving joy to our town. The cucumbers are sold in the town even before they reach the markets. Thanks to NNKUMw’s support of the cucumber farming, our students were able to fulfill their dreams. We are planning to expand our greenhouse farm into a co-op for our jobless youths who face having to leave the town. Next, we saw more profits from selling poultry than selling the eggs, so we are breeding 250 chickens more this year, 350 chickens since last year.  The grown chickens are caught and sold by our mission center members. The feet, since they’re filled with nutrition, get boiled and fed to our church members and needy students. The chickens are raised healthy from vegetable feeds, and they taste good, so they are popular products. Considering my old age, I have been thinking about ways to provide economic support for Ushtobe. So I’m currently experimenting with various kinds of crops. s10076418351.jpegLastly, report on the Koryo Diaspora Museum: being heartbroken about the traces of Koryo descendants–who were deported to Central Asia on the train from Vladivostok 80 years ago–disappearing, I had prayed for a museum/memorial. Then through NNKUMw, Kay S Rhee and Jane Yoon sent us a precious offering for the museum. The construction of the outside has finished, and now we are going through constructions inside the building and the front yard. The museum plans to recreate the house that Koryo people had built when they first arrived to Kazakhstan, made out of straw and soil with a reed roof on top. Our Koryo elderly are so pleased, saying they now have no regrets in life, as they watch the museum being built. Our prayer request is that the people to whom we deliver lunch meals cooked in Ushtobe Mission Center would receive Christ. We are also desperately praying that the gospel would be spread to our neighboring town as well. I am always thankful for NNKUMw’s support in missions.”

영어책 “Journey With Jesus 1-4”가 2,000권 그리고 한국어책 “소명”이 1,000권, 그리고 한인여선교회전국연합회가 보내주신 선교 헌금으로 2,000권의 영어책 “A Guide to Inner Healing”이 출간되었습니다.
(A Guide to Inner Healing)”에는 전보다 더 많은 기도가 들어있습니다.

To:National Network of Korean United Methodist women

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

There were so many changes at Adams County Detention Facility due to COVID-19.  Since last month, all the religious volunteers have not been allowed to enter the facility, and all worship services and Bible studies have been canceled. The only ones who can work in the facility are the essential workers such as police officers, nurses and doctors, administration and two chaplains. All staff members are required to wear a mask. At this critical time,Myungrae Kim Lee, Executive director of NNKUMw sent me masks that fit me very well and I am using them in the facility. Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness!
All the new prisoners also wear masks and they are housed in a solitary room where they can’t have any contact with others for 14 days. They can come out for an hour and take a shower. After 14 days, if the nurse decides that the inmate doesn’t have any symptoms of COVID-19, they can be housed in the general housing.
In many other prisons and jails, chaplains are not allowed to enter the facility because of the Corona virus. Thankfully, our facility considers chaplains as essential workers, so I am able to lead prayer meetings and Holy Communion in the women’s house and counsel both men and women. I go into all the housing and deliver the books to the inmates. Since all programs are canceled, distributing TPPM books is now essential more than ever.
Transformation Project Prison Ministry (TPPM) printed three books in 2020: 2,000 copies of English “Journey With Jesus 1-4”, 1,000 copies of Korean “Callings”, and 2,000 copies of English “A Guide to Inner Healing” which was published with the funds donated by National Network of Korean United Methodist women. There are additional prayers in the book, “A Guide to Inner Healing” which was published this time. A woman inmate in the segregation unit was having such a difficult time with pain in her heart and didn’t know what to do. I told her to put her hands on her heart and read “A Healing Prayer” from the book, “A Guide to Inner Healing” over and over until she found peace. The next day she told me with a smile that the prayer helped her so much and that she has found peace.
A male inmate in the medical unit told me how much the TPPM book, “Four Voices” has helped him. He was having such a difficult time and I suggested a healing prayer from “A Guide to Inner Healing” and he broke down in tears when he started the prayer. He said that was the prayer he needed. I was in tears also. I am so thankful for the funds you have sent us, so that our inmates can experience God’s love and healing power through the books.
In addition, in 2018, National Network of Korean United Methodist women sent funds to publish Spanish books, so “Maximum Saints 1-3”, “Dreams and Interpretations”, and “Four Voices” were published in Spanish. Many Hispanic inmates are appreciative of the books and some even sent me a letter to express their thanks, saying how much these books helped their spiritual growth. Please pray that the Lord will use these books to reach out to those who are desperately in need of the Gospel, so that they can meet the Lord Jesus Christ, our source of hope. Please pray that our facility inmates can have worship services, which I think is the most important part of my ministry because it pleases the Lord. “Journey with Jesus 1-4” was translated into Chinese and is getting ready to be printed. I ask for your prayers so we can reach out to the Chinese prisoners.
Again, thank you for your support on this project. Many gospel seeds are being planted thanks to the book project and I am thankful for your prayers and participation. God bless you!
May the Lord keep you safe and may His favor be with you all!

Gratefully,

(How to Pray: The Best of John Wesley on Prayer)’를 통해서 우리들의 깊은 영성개발을 위해서 자신을 들여다보고 도전해 보자.

Always Rejoice, Pray, and Give Thanks

We are now facing times of fear, anxiety, and despair due to the coronavirus pandemic that we have never experienced before. These negative circumstances tend to influence our spiritual state, causing us to lose peace in our hearts. Yet on the positive note, as people stay home to keep social distancing in order to stop the spread of the virus, we can better strive to focus on prayer and reading for our spirituality. So for this month’s issue, let us reflect on ourselves and be challenged for our deep spiritual growth as we look into “How to Pray: the Best of John Wesley on Prayer.”

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (Thessalonians 5:16-18).

Experience abundant joy in God and “rejoice always.” Also, remember to “pray continually.” Prayer is the fruit which bears from “always rejoicing.” Remember to “give thanks in all circumstances.” ‘Thankfulness’ is the fruit of ‘rejoicing’ and ‘praying.’ Christ’s completeness arises from always rejoicing, praying continually, and giving thanks in all circumstances. We cannot be more complete than this; yet neither can we live a life that falls behind this commandment.

Our Lord has not only paid a price to attain righteousness for us, but also joy. Thus, being saved from sin by Christ, a true gospel-led life is living a joyful life in His love. Prayer is quoted as “our spiritual breathing.” A living person does not cease breathing. Likewise, if we are truly rejoicing of God’s presence, we must live a life of ‘unceasingly’ praying and giving praise. If not, our joy would end in mere imagination.44.jpg

Giving thanks is inseparable from true prayer. Because the essence of thankfulness is connected to prayer. Continuous prayer means always giving praise–whether it be time of comfort, suffering, success, or extreme tribulation. We must live for God alone, praising Him in all things and believing that everything comes from Him. When facing a problem, we neither choose nor reject it, neither be pleased nor displeased about it. Whatever it may be, we must only think whether or not it fits God’s complete will.

“…for this is God’s will.” God’s will is always good, and is always pointing toward our salvation. Remember these words of God and live a life of rejoicing, praying, and giving thanks according to His will.

(Brother Lawrence, 1611-1691)

The Practice of the Presence of God

Author: Brother Lawrence (1611-1691)
Publisher: Duranno

Nicolas Herman was born around 400 years ago in Lorraine, France. With his injury from fighting in the Thirty Years’ War, he struggles adjusting back to life despite his efforts. One day as he sees a tree with its leaves fallen on the ground, realizing it will gain new life with fresh buds, he feels God’s divine providence. He enters the monastery at age 50, receiving the name Lawrence and starts doing the chores. Holding onto the ethic of ‘putting God’s heart even in small acts like flipping an egg,’ he makes efforts to think of God every moment during his holy training.

We confess we love Jesus, and praise there is nothing else more precious than Him. We say we will love the Lord more than any other joy or glory in life, and that we will commit our lives for Him. But if we really do love Jesus, we should live thinking about Him more often. Because if not, our confessions would be fake. Our proof of loving Him would be thinking about Him more and more. Like the words of Brother Lawrence, if we make it a habit to deliberately think about Him more, it will become much easier for us to be conscious of Him and feel His presence.

At this time of worldwide suffering, this book points toward a path to realizing that nothing in this world is outside of God’s will.

“Easier if we do it together: $1,000 fund raising for NNKUMw”

20190925_171741.jpgThe National Network of the Korean United Methodist Women has held the leadership training every two year since 1993. The last event was held in September in Nashville, Tennessee. The leadership training was made possible by financial support of the Women’s Division and donations from KUMW members. Many leaders who received training are currently working as pastors, officers at the jurisdictional and conference level, and Women’s Division board of directors.  Many young Korean American women also participated in the training event.

The NNKUMw is a mission fruit of the UMW. Its dramatic growth has a beautiful story behind the faith in action of one UMW unit.  In 1884, Lucidia Baldwin, a member of the Ohio Conference, gave the designated offering of $88.00 to be used to educate Korean women in Korea.   She was having a difficult time after deaths of her husband, daughter and grandson all at the same time when she heard about the plights of Korean women. She sold her husband’s property and gave the offering to the Ohio UMW Conference.  With this offering, the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church (North) was able to send Mary Scranton as its first woman missionary to Korea and started Ewha School for Girls in 1885. She can be compared with the woman in the Bible who made the bread with yeast and shared it with her neighbors.   We can say we are offspring’s of Mrs. Baldwin’s mission offering, so we owe her the debt of mission.

The members of the NNKUMw are learning, sharing, and growing together with the leadership training.  We are doing our best to bear another mission fruit by the national leadership training and the Bible Women’s Program abroad.   To be able to achieve our goals, the leadership training plays a vital role.

Since 2007, the  NNKUMw had the leadership training event without the support of the UMW National Office.   We need $60,000 for the 2017 national training event.  We need your help. If many members of the NNKUMw donate $1,000 over two years, the training event will be possible.

It is easier if we try together!

We can become another Mrs. Baldwin in spreading the good news of Christ to women, children and youth who are still living in the dark. We ask you to write a new chapter of mission history by enabling the national leadership training to be the tool to develop future leaders for Christ.
