Sending Masks That Save Lives Project

Cornerstone Family Ministries NNKUMw has sent 2,500 child masks and 500 adult masks to Cornerstone Family Ministries (CFM) in Tampa, Florida. With the help of Anne Lee, president of Cal-Pacific Conference KUMw Network, we placed a special order for these child and adult masks to a factory in Los Angeles.

When CFM had requested for help in need of 7,000 child masks to the United Methodist Women National Office, we NNKUMw immediately responded by sending 3,000 child masks and 500 adult masks for teachers. CFM has sent us a card of appreciation and a photo, thanking us for the mask gifts. Cornerstone Family Ministries (CFM) has a unique history dating back to 1892. In the late 19th century, segregation ruled the public. For many of Tampa’s immigrant families there were no public schools open to their children. Rosa Valdez was a Hispanic woman who lived in Tampa and was moved by the plight of the newly arriving immigrant children.

With her own funds and the help of benefactors, she established a small school in her west Tampa neighborhood. At the same time, Eliza Wolff, who wintered in Tampa, pleaded with the Women’s Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church South (today known as United Methodist Women) to form a mission school for the immigrants living in east Tampa. The determination and caring of these two women were the foundation of the mission that is now known as Cornerstone Family Ministries.

The public schools eventually opened their doors to Latino children, so a settlement program was instituted to meet broader needs of the families like cooking and sewing classes that would benefit children in their home environment. Cornerstone Family Ministries has evolved through the years and is now represented by a broad section of the Christian community who like Rosa Valdez and Eliza Wolff are moved to make a difference for Christ in the lives of marginalized children and their families. Moving with the times and the changes in the neighborhoods that make up Tampa’s inner-city, Cornerstone serves the needs of children from diverse backgrounds using education and Christian character-building to equip children and their families to navigate the difficult circumstances in their realities so they can hope for a brighter tomorrow.

Letter of Appreciation from Hopi Tribe Missionary

Greetings to NNKUMw board and members! I am a Missionary Eunhee Pyo serving the Hopi tribe. In the midst of this worldwide suffering from COVID-19, I want to express thanks for the special love from NNKUMw.

First, we distributed the 2,500 surgical masks you’ve sent us, along with 500 masks from other churches, to First, Second, and Third Mesa churches (1,000 masks each). We gave out the 80 N95 masks to each missionary family as well as those working at the Mesa Risk Management Center. We distributed the heartfelt handmade 1,214 child masks packaged with Bible verses as such: 200 to First Mesa Church members and families, 400 to workers at First Mesa Emergency Services, and 500 to the Hopi Emergency Response Team (HERT). Through HERT, we are planning to distribute the masks evenly across villages, and give out the rest to those who come to the church. We will share the 10,000 additional masks you’ve sent us for the whole Hopi nation to use.

An article on Navajo Tribune reported that the Navajo Native American Tribe has the third highest infection rates in the country. Native Americans are at high risk of being exposed to this virus, due to their underlying health conditions such as obesity, diabetes, alcohol and drug addiction, as well as the living conditions. Despite this risk of being located right in the middle of Navajo tribe area, the Hopi government’s quick action led to a low confirmed case rate of around 20 patients in the Hopi tribe area and 2 patients in the First Mesa community.s729.jpg

Our church had initiated efforts by demonstrating social distancing, distributing handmade masks early on, and donating church offering and mission donations. Our hearts were aching by the increasing requests for more masks; so, the masks sent from NNKUMw were invaluable for us. Our First Mesa area leader thanked our church for contributing to the community’s well-done response.
The financial assistance from the federal government is not being achieved yet, and our economic struggle is worsening as we have many people who do not qualify for the emergency funding. The First Mesa Emergency Management Center contacted us for help three weeks ago, sharing the news that those living above Mesa are experiencing extreme hardships. So, we started a ministry of making and sending out 100 burgers every Wednesday.
I recall hearing that, when the corona virus started arousing a fearful atmosphere in society worrying, “Has the apocalypse begun?” the believers responded by saying, “Christian life is about always preparing for the end times. We have nothing to fear about.” Please pray that we will act in this pandemic believing that a time of crisis is a time for mission, and shine in this darkness as the hope and children of our living God.
I once again express my gratitude to NNKUMw for shining the light of love to our Hopi nation, and demonstrating that Christians are different. I pray for the peace, joy, and grace of Christ to be with you all.

The United Methodist Women Act of Repentance (AOR) Working Group을 조직하여 구제사업을 벌이고 있다.

5-3-4.jpg

Shiprock

Daryl Junes Joe

Sending Masks That Save Lives Project: Masks and Water Barrels for the Navajo Nation

COVID-19 has become a huge crisis for the tribal communities in America. Navajo nation–who have founded autonomous countries across three states: Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah–are facing poor sanitation, shortage of clean water, and inadequate access to medical sources. 30% of the 175,000 Navajo population have to go to public facilities hundreds of miles away to fetch drinking water. According to a CNN report, current confirmed cases in Navajo rank the third highest in the country right after New York and New Jersey. Moreover, individual medical expenses in these tribal communities are only 1/3 of what would cost an average American. For reference, the Navajo people have served in the U.S. army in the 6.25 Korean War as code deciphers.
Upon receiving request for help from Ms. Daryl Junes Joe–UMW Director as well as a Navajo herself–the NNKUMw sent 13,000 masks and $3,000 for purchasing water barrels. Director Daryl Junes Joe has sent us a letter of appreciation as below.
Currently, the United Methodist Women National office has organized the United Methodist Women Act of Repentance (AOR) Working Group, holding various charities. The most immediate necessities for the Navajo nation are: food, hand sanitizers, disinfectants, diapers, 55-Gallon Water Barrels, and more. If any KUMW member would like to help out the Navajo nation, please send your donation offering to NNKUMw. We are planning to collect the donations to purchase and send the necessary items to the Navajo people.

Letter of Appreciation from Navajo UMW Director

To :   National Network of Korean UMw                                   May 24, 2020
From:   Ms. Daryl Junes Joe, UMW Director, New Mexico Conference

I wish to extend a sincere appreciation and ahe’hee’ (thank you) for your generous mask and monetary donation to the Navajo Nation. I wish to share some information for you regarding your donations.  The donations were distributed to many rural families who may or may not have running water or electricity depending on the location of their homes. The families have either traveled toour location for pickups or stayed in their homes waiting for volunteers to bring supplies and masks to them.
The donations were able to reach out to so many families, many have multifamily in one house and share the supplies. There are several programs, individual family groups, governmental entities that are working hard to get donations and deliver goods to those families.

We have many wonderful volunteers who have vehicles to haul the goods to the homes, some of the monetary donations pay for their gas, sack lunch meals are prepared for lunches along their routes.  Here is a list of recipients of your donations: Families located locally in Shiprock and rural regions 3 hospitals and 2 clinics – doctors, nurses, and janitorial staff  Law Enforcement, Criminal Investigators,  EMT’s and Fire Department staff Community Health Representatives Local farmers and ranchers Volunteers who give out food boxes on the street  Homeless people  Child haven (child abuse & neglect cases) Domestic Violence shelter (2)  SANE Program (domestic violence sexual assault cases) Family Crisis Center (domestic violence and homeless families) School staff providing curbside breakfast and lunch meals for children

I’m an elder and in the high-risk category so I do not go out to deliver, I have been able to drop off the donations at the nearest facilities or have staff come to my house to pick up donations.

I do receive information as to where deliveries are made however, I do not get the numbers of deliveries since that will vary from family to family. Many of our programs is hospital sand first responders have not been provided protective supplies, so a portion of your donations are given to them along with water and snacks to help them throughout their days.

The monetary donations go to purchase 55-gallon water barrels which are filled and delivered to homes. Each recipient is informed of your UMW groups/churches of each donation and they express their heartfelt appreciation and Ahe’hee’ to each of you.

Again, Thank you very much for your donations. Our people are a strong people and proud of our traditions and culture and we can care for one another, however in this time of difficulty we  appreciate your donations which helps with our health and welfare.

May our great Creator bless you abundantly with good health, safety and happiness with your family.

In His name,
Daryl Junes Joe

‘Missionary Alice Sharp recieved national medal 'from the Korean govrnment'

Missionary Alice Sharp (1871-1972) became the first foreigner recognized as a female Korean independence activist, as she was posthumously conferred the Dongbaek Medal of the Order of Civil Merit. Missionary Alice Sharp received her UMW missionary training in Brooklyn, New York and was sent to Ewha School in Seoul as a teacher.

In 1905, she married her husband Missionary Robert Sharp, heads down to Gongju and continues education and mission ministries; 3 years into their marriage Missionary Robert Sharp becomes a martyr, passing away due to an epidemic. Yet Missionary Alice Sharp endures these times of suffering, going on to serve the women of Chungchungnam-do as a Methodist missionary for 40 years. She dedicated her life in founding many educational institutions and churches including 9 girls’ schools (including Gongju Yeongmyeong School), 7 kindergartens, and various Methodist churches. She also found a women network, actively doing missions for women and gospel ministries.

When Christianity was persecuted under the Japanese regime, Missionary Alice Sharp demonstrated love for God and for the country through her school education. She was a mentor to martyr Yu Gwan-sun. Yu Gwan-sun was Alice Sharp’s adopted daughter and disciple, finishing her middle school education at Yeongmyeong school and entering Ewha School with Alice Sharp’s recommendation. With her fervor for national independence she gets martyred during her imprisonment for leading the 3.1 Independence Movement. Many students mentored by Missionary Alice Sharp became great Christian leaders as leading contributors to the society.

Missionary Alice Sharp’s recent award of the national medal is a great joy and pride for us NNKUMw, as the fruit of United Methodist Women’s missions.

5-4-21.jpgKeeping a Healthy Body

Due to COVID-19, the top primary concern of people all across the globe now is ‘a healthy body and immune system.’ We make efforts to keep ourselves physically healthy from the invisible virus, but we as believers must make much more efforts for our spiritual health. Quoting Rev. John Wesley, we must glorify God through our health by watching what we intake through our bodies.
“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:18).
These “houses of clay” (Job 4:19) that our souls have put on are in need of constant repair. Otherwise, we might get buried in the soil much earlier than nature's course. Our daily bread helps us prevent this early end, as well as repair the natural decline. In the pagan culture, commemorating the gods before eating by pouring some alcohol was common practice. This was an earthly tradition followed in the past. What better way is there for everyone than praying to give thanks and seek God’s grace before eating?
Regarding the amounts of food we eat–healthy people generally do not overeat. They don’t continue eating something until they’re sick of it, nor get drunk with alcohol. When they eat, they take in a couple amount of food in a comfortable manner. This also promotes good digestion.
In order to promote our mind and body health, it is best to eat small and simple, yet good-quality foods. Hunger helps maintain a good appetite and makes the food much tastier on our palate. But the best dish of all is: thankfulness. A food eaten joyfully is the best food. Then we can receive God’s promise of eternity despite taking in small amounts of food.

We believe the things that happen around us in life are never coincidental. Or so we want to believe. We want to see God’s work and know His plans, drowning in disappointment when things happen against our wishes.
‘There is no coincidence in God’s work.’ This ought to be our faith. Things are all changing around us, as we are facing a ‘new normal’ each day. Are we to just act in this situation– or, react , thinking it’s part of God’s plan. Tozer’s “We Travel an Appointed Way” teaches us to put away our habit of letting our days just pass by, and instead, react with faith toward God’s plan.

“Easier if we do it together: $1,000 fund raising for NNKUMw”

20190925_171741.jpgThe National Network of the Korean United Methodist Women has held the leadership training every two year since 1993. The last event was held in September in Nashville, Tennessee. The leadership training was made possible by financial support of the Women’s Division and donations from KUMW members. Many leaders who received training are currently working as pastors, officers at the jurisdictional and conference level, and Women’s Division board of directors.  Many young Korean American women also participated in the training event.

The NNKUMw is a mission fruit of the UMW. Its dramatic growth has a beautiful story behind the faith in action of one UMW unit.  In 1884, Lucidia Baldwin, a member of the Ohio Conference, gave the designated offering of $88.00 to be used to educate Korean women in Korea.   She was having a difficult time after deaths of her husband, daughter and grandson all at the same time when she heard about the plights of Korean women. She sold her husband’s property and gave the offering to the Ohio UMW Conference.  With this offering, the Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church (North) was able to send Mary Scranton as its first woman missionary to Korea and started Ewha School for Girls in 1885. She can be compared with the woman in the Bible who made the bread with yeast and shared it with her neighbors.   We can say we are offspring’s of Mrs. Baldwin’s mission offering, so we owe her the debt of mission.

The members of the NNKUMw are learning, sharing, and growing together with the leadership training.  We are doing our best to bear another mission fruit by the national leadership training and the Bible Women’s Program abroad.   To be able to achieve our goals, the leadership training plays a vital role.

Since 2007, the  NNKUMw had the leadership training event without the support of the UMW National Office.   We need $60,000 for the 2017 national training event.  We need your help. If many members of the NNKUMw donate $1,000 over two years, the training event will be possible.

It is easier if we try together!

We can become another Mrs. Baldwin in spreading the good news of Christ to women, children and youth who are still living in the dark. We ask you to write a new chapter of mission history by enabling the national leadership training to be the tool to develop future leaders for Christ.
